IPv6
We had an idea. We wanted to deploy ipv6 in our hosting project…The ultimate goal is for this page (or perhaps the whole site even) to be available (only?) on v6 connections. The idea was partially inspired by IETF meeting at which ipv4 was turned off and the fact that sooner or later (and it’s sooner than generally expected) the v4 address space will run out. Good luck to us all then…
All the steps made to achieve this will be reported here. This is the preliminary to-do list:
- Prepare our server OS & software for full ipv6 connectivity: configure DNS server and records (BIND), Apache, etc.
- Verify the service provider of choice has ipv6 backbone connectivity
- Obtain registered ipv6 address prefix, setup routing and verify global connectivity
Ah, if I only had the time…
IPv6 update…

Our ISP (the one I also used to work for) is rumored to have a full IPv6 core network deployment completed sometime during the year 2009 on their roadmap. That leaves us hope we will also see uplinks to v6 backbone Tier 1 providers at that same time for full connectivity, doubtfull though.
One more tiny step to ipv6…

Yesterday, my partner-in-arms for this collocation project has made another small advancement towards ipv6 connectivity. He configured his private DNS server (BIND) residing on a separate, internal network segment to have full ipv6 records support.
This is worth noticing because our main DNS is also running BIND and will be set up similarly, also allowing to discover, test and prevent possible issues during the deployment on our main server.
