Printing delay on HP LaserJet network printers…

// November 2nd, 2011 // Comments Off // Uncategorized

I’ve encountered a problem lately with a network HP LaserJet printer: after submitting a print job, the printer would stay still for about 30 seconds and only then start printing. It was an M1536dnf MFP model but this may probably hold for any HP network printer… This delay was unbearable for some.

Pidgin and themes…

// June 9th, 2011 // Comments Off // Uncategorized

I’ve moved to using Pidgin long time ago… Other im-clients started to disappoint in looks, functionality, speed and resource requirements, I mean, did you see the memory use footprint of Live Messenger lately?! So, all that leads to the search and eventually - Pidgin! I found a nicely looking theme for it: Clearlooks-DarkLime, originally posted here on Lifehacker. But simply installing it according to their instructions no longer works - the controls like scroll-bars, menu lists, radio buttons and etc. turned ugly…

Philips 42PFL8404H LCD TV

// January 11th, 2010 // No Comments » // Uncategorized

After recently purchasing a Philips 42″ LCD TV (42PFL8404H) and finding very few first-hand experience reports online about it prior to, I decided to give it my 5 cent.

This isn’t going to be a full review or even a technical one, just some personal hands-on observations.

Windows 7 does NT 4 Domains (NOT!)

// October 22nd, 2009 // No Comments » // News

Today, Windows 7 was released to “general availability” and shipping into stores all over. Upon this glorious event I had a little, sour note to add…

Windows 7 or Windows 2008 R2 Server is by design not capable to join the elderly Windows NT 4 based domains. For those that have not upgraded their network’s domains to any of the Active Directory based ones, this is rather slightly sad and inconvenient news.

Lord of The Rings…

I now officially propose handing a title “Lord of The Rings” to anyone responsible for creating a network loop on any kind of switched or routed network. We have already implemented this practice at the company - highly effective!

Integrating Adaptec SATA RAID dirvers into Windows XP\2003 Server CD

// August 6th, 2009 // No Comments » // Uncategorized

It’s somehow much more fulfilling to achieve something in a field that isn’t of your primary expertise. So, after a slightly prolonged battle with a diskette-less but SATA RAID ridden server that needed to have Windows XP reinstalled on it… I proclaimed victory!

Picsez!

// July 22nd, 2009 // No Comments » // Uncategorized

Added a link to the pics page… Some photos from the old job, our cat and maybe I’ll add more later.

It’s using the minimal Gallery script - somewhat slow on first thumbs generation and can’t re-size the images but is very low in demands for server side components, has a very simple setup and looks good.

Windows 7 - same old shares problem…

// July 20th, 2009 // No Comments » // Uncategorized

Vista caused problems with it’s default setting of “NTLMv2-only” on the LAN Manager authentication level. This setting means that a Vista station is only allowed to connect to network servers of an equal but not lesser authentication level (lesser would be XP and earlier Windows versions, some network storage drives and Linux Samba based shared resources).
The issue was easily treatable by changing a local security policy (or via registry) to permit negotiation of a lower security level authentication methods before trying the higher one - NTLMv2.
Same issue inherently remained in Windows 7 (currently RC). The solution steps follow below…
